A. D. 9. 9Big Black Atomizer 1. Steve Albini non ha certo bisogno di presentazioni quando si parla del suo lavoro di produttore. In Utero vi dice niente Ma bene non dimenticarsi che prima di plasmare i suoni di un numero esagerato di artisti, Albini fu mente e anima dei suoi Big Black, capaci in soli cinque anni di gettari le basi per buona parte della musica pesante immediatamente successiva. Culmine di tutto il debutto Atomizer, nel quale il suono unico della chitarra di Albini la fa da padrone indiscusso. Un vero e proprio assalto sonoro che manda a casa a testa bassa lingenua cattiveria di certo trascurabile metal e che ritroveremo in certe sferzate industrial. Doveroso notare il sarcarsmo, talvolta brutale, insito nelle parole di Albini, che allepoca venne frainteso e valse ai Big Black letichetta di razzisti. Lenergia sprigionata da Atomizer non ha eguali nel resto della carriera di Albini, forse nemmeno nelle vesti di produttore il nostro ha saputo catturare la furia racchiusa in questo LP. M. U. 9. 8Christian Death Only Theatre of Pain 1. Concentrato di violenza punk e oscure atmosfere gotiche, il disco in parola merita senza dubbio di essere annoverato tra i pi blasfemi e dissacranti di ogni tempo. Musica dissoluta, intrisa di riferimenti antireligiosi, sicuramente dotata di un certo fascino perverso, che rispecchia appieno lanimo fragile ed irrequieto di Rozz Williams, leader indiscusso della band, capace di divenire in brevissimo tempo un autentico punto di riferimento allinterno della scena dark a stelle e strisce. Daltra parte, il titolo stesso di questo album sembra sintetizzare alla perfezione quella che stata la breve e tormentata esistenza del suo autore, fino al tragico epilogo. Unopera sofferta, claustrofobica e quanto mai intensa, realizzata da un uomo che non stava bene con se stesso e con gli altri, sempre pronto a lanciarsi in feroci invettive contro lipocrisia e il finto perbenismo della societ civile statunitense, che saliva sul palco vestito da sposa, simulando il rituale della comunione o compiendo gesti sessualmente espliciti nei confronti di immagini sacre. Brani come Cavity First Communion, con le sue chitarre distorte su di un basso ipnotico, o come Romeos Distress, cupa e rabbiosa power ballad che vanta innumerevoli tentativi di imitazione, sono a tutti gli effetti dei piccoli classici, destinati a rimanere per sempre negli annali del gothic rock tutto. Il disco che a tutti gli effetti ha segnato linizio di una nuova fase nella carriera dei peperoncini, che molti allepoca avevano frettolosamente dato per spacciati. Hillel Slovak, leccentrico chitarrista che aveva avuto un ruolo fondamentale nei primi anni di vita della band, era morto per overdose ed il batterista Jack Irons, di fronte ad una tragedia tanto grande, non se lera sentita di andare avanti ed aveva preferito abbandonare il progetto, salvo decidere di ripresentarsi sulle scene qualche tempo pi tardi dietro le pelli dei Pearl Jam. Il frontman Anthony Kiedis ed il bassista Michael Flea Balzary, compagni di scuola di Hillel e come lui dediti ad una vita di eccessi, arruolati Chad Smith alla batteria e lappena diciottenne John Frusciante alla chitarra elettrica, riuscirono tuttavia a trovare dentro di s la forza per disintossicarsi e ripartire, ripresentandosi alla grande davanti al proprio pubblico con questo trascinante mix di velocit, groove ed energia. Al suo interno, un pugno di brani inediti semplicemente memorabili, tra cui il singolo Knock Me Down scritto da Kiedis in ricordo di Slovak, Subway to Venus e Stone Cold Bush, oltre alle riuscite cover di Higher Ground e Fire. Dopo aver irrimediabilmente alterato le sorti della canzone pop, i Jesus Mary Chain mostrano quanto involontario fosse quel manifesto rumoristico che divenuto Psychocandy con il disco appena successivo, Darklands, la collezione di brani con cui scelgono di puntare allolimpo dei grandi del rock. Non sar che il primo di una serie di falliti tentativi. Errore madornale sarebbe per lasciarsi sfuggire il patinato jangle pop di pezzi come Happy When It Rains o April Skies, solo per il fatto che i fratelli Reid hanno deciso di non ripetersi, tenendo riverberi, echi e distorsioni in secondo piano rispetto alle melodie. Ma nonostante il potenziale radiofonico, i riflettori si sono spenti lo stesso lasciando i Jesus Mary Chain come simbolo dellindie inglese degli Ottanta. Stanchi della scena hardcore in cui bazzicavano fin dagli esordi, i fratelli Kirkwood si lasciano affascinare dai Violent Femmes e voltano pagina, mettendo da parte i precedenti intenti punk per esplorare un suono originale, un mix di country western e noise che non lascer indifferenti gruppi come i Dinosaur Jr e i Nirvana. Quello che colpisce in questo albo labilit dei Meat Puppets di far combaciare due generi apparentemente molto distanti fra loro con una scrittura dei pezzi incisiva e accattivante, che riprende a proprio piacere anche la psichedelia e il folk pi classico. On Escape, the trio manage a set thats diverting from end to end something Spoonie G, The Cold Crush Brothers and The Furious Five conspicuously failed to deliver. For all of Escapes pop smarts, its a chilly collection Friends later cannibalised by Public Enemy, Nas and MF DOOM goes in for bug eyed paranoia, and Freaks Come Out At Night sketches a John Hogarth drawing of downtown Brooklyn after hours. And, three decades on, theres absolutely no messing with electro boogie nonpareil Five Minutes Of Funk a sinewy goosebump raiser thats so good, they couldnt not include it twice. Salva Although Im too young to have enjoyed this record at time of release, while I was growing up I had records that sampled tracks from Escape on heavy rotation. Pac, Mac Dre, Bone Thugs, Snoop, Nas, KRS One, and the list goes on Later when I got into my phase of digging for old hip hop, electro and freestyle, it was hard not to come across this record, and I got to soak in how dope this whole LP is. Sure, Reek of Putrefaction might not quite carry the same influence as Napalm Deaths Scum, and theres been grander grindcore records released since its certainly no The Inalienable Dreamless in the widescreen stakes but in terms of throwing yourself head first into a pit of musical slurry, can it be topped At some points sloppy and shlocky, at others sadistically precise in its razor sharp dynamic twists, it was Peels favourite record of the year, and surely top five for any self respecting grind bastard. PHILIP GLASSKOYAANISQATI OSTISLAND, 1. Koyaanisqatsi was the record that helped minimalist composer Philip Glass transition from being an artist loved by seemingly only an elite few to being a bona fide commercial success. Preceding the immensely popular Glassworks by a year, Koyaanisqatsi was the soundtrack to a wordless film, and demanded the attention of listeners and viewers alike. For many listeners this was the first time theyd heard minimalist composition at all, and Glass combination of orchestral flourishes, organ and synthesizer broke a sound that went on to influence countless musicians. The records centerpiece The Grid is where things really fall into place ,with rapidly panning synthesized arpeggios and synth bass dancing around Glasss urgent brass and woodwind with a masterful grace. A generation of post classical experimental types would be lost without this record Johann Johannsson and Max Richter, were looking at you. Zola Jesus Philip Glass Koyaanisqatsi feels like a mantra adrift in space. The repetitive motif that circles around and around throughout the record starts to transform like a hazy dream you cant quite explain. Glass can pull off playing three notes for 6 minutes straight and by the end of it you feel like youre listening to a completely different song. It is impossible not get lost in this record. Benjamin John Power Blanck MassFuck Buttons I remember the first time I saw Koyaanisqatsi and it kind of blew me away. I was quite a bit younger and I dont think Id ever seen anything like that, without the use of any actual dialogue. I remember being drawn to it, and I still think its great. The idea of a soundtrack really interests me and I think its a really amazing example of music accompanying film, quite groundbreaking.
